Greater Jamaica has a rich history, and is one of the most ethnically diverse urban centers in the United States. From its early days as a trading route for Native American tribes, to its current place as a magnet for people from around the world, this vibrant district is an important hub for commerce and the arts.

Once home to legendary jazz greats, Jamaica is again growing as a destination for African-American and Caribbean-American musical performances and music production. The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, an educational and visual arts community center, ranks among the most important cultural institutions in Queens. Downtown Jamaica is also home to York College, the newest senior college in the City University of New York system.
